The Wild Robot

AIPersonhoodAdaptationKindness

Roz the robot wasn’t built for a forest. She was built for a warehouse. But that’s where she ends up, and the animals want nothing to do with her. What happens next is a surprisingly tender story about learning, adapting, and becoming part of a family you weren’t designed for.

Why we picked it

Our kids are growing up around robots and AI, so a story that asks “what makes something alive?” is worth having early. It’s gentle and funny, but the questions underneath it are big ones — and honestly, ones the grown-ups don’t fully have answers to either.

Questions to chew on

  • Roz learns by watching and copying the animals. Is that the same as how you learn? How is it different?
  • The animals are scared of Roz at first. What changes their minds?
  • Does Roz actually feel things, or is she just very good at acting like she does? Does it matter?

Good to know: shorter and lighter than most books on our list — a nice one after The Hobbit. There’s a sad stretch in the middle worth talking through together.
