The Ruins of Gorlan
MentorshipSkillStrategyLoyalty
Will is too small to be a warrior, so he’s crushed when he isn’t picked for battle school. Then a mysterious Ranger chooses him as an apprentice, and Will starts learning that the most powerful person in the room is often the one you never noticed.
Why we picked it
It’s a great story about being underestimated and then out-working everybody through skill and patience. The mentor-and-apprentice bond is the heart of it — the kind of steady, earned relationship worth talking about with a kid who’s figuring out what they’re good at.
Questions to chew on
- Will wanted to be a knight. Why is being a Ranger harder than it looks?
- His mentor rarely gives easy praise. Is that a good way to teach someone, or too tough?
- Where in the story does being clever beat being strong?
Good to know: the start of a long, well-loved series. There’s danger and a scary villain, but it stays adventure-appropriate for most grade-schoolers.
